Online OCD treatment works PDF Print E-mail

Preliminary results for a new online psychological treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) show it is effective in managing symptoms and improving quality of life.

Developed at Swinburne University of Technology by a team of researchers led by Professor Michael Kyrios, OCD STOP is a comprehensive web-based treatment.

“One of the most common psychological disorders, OCD affects one in 36 Australians at some point in their lives,” Kyrios said.

“Despite being a leading cause of disability, it is a hidden problem in the Australian population, with sufferers experiencing guilt, shame and depression over unwanted and intrusive obsessions and/or compulsions.

“The online treatment will potentially make a huge difference for people in remote or rural areas, who have limited access to psychological services.”

Early results suggest OCD STOP is effective in decreasing the severity of OCD symptoms, increasing confidence in dealing with the symptoms, and improving quality of life.

“I have loved the program and all that it offers,” one participant said after completing OCD STOP.

“I have had OCD for many years and have finally found something I can rely on and that is there to help me at any time.”

A larger study is now under way to see who can most benefit from this treatment. To get involved and get free expert treatment for OCD, access the program through the website www.ocdstop.org.au.

The study is open to all Australian residents aged 18 years and over, and offers free online treatment supported by expert therapists.
